Nel Bentley Hees’ husband, Gene Raymond( who was actually born by the name, Raymond Guion) was an American film and television actor, born on the 13th of August, 1908 in New York City. Nel’s husband attended the Professional Children’s School while simultaneously making his appearance in some productions ( Rip Van Winkle included). His Broadway premiere, which he held at the age of  17, was in The Cradle Snatchers which ran two years.

Raymond was widely known in Hollywood for his very outspoken nature against the studio system, however, he seemed to take a special liking in the actors, Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, whom he claimed wre the ones who “knew what they were doing”

Although Nel’s husband was reputed for passing on very verbose statements, she remained very elegant in her speech, and actually had not really had much interactions with the press.

Nel Bentley Hees, was not recognized to have had any career. However, if she did have one it surely was lay hid from the press at the time. She lived a very private life, so it would not be so shocking to have such elements of her life unknown.

As for her husband, Gene Raymond, he was a film, television, and stage actor of the 1930s and 1940s. He also was a singer, composer, screenwriter, director, producer, and decorated military pilot.

These numerous occupational roles did not deter him from having his screen debut in Personal Maid in the year 1931.

He made another early appearance in the movie, If I Had a Million, which was directed by both W. C. Fields and Charles Laughton. 

Nel’s husband was then noticed for his impeccable looks( the cliche blonde hair, blue eyes, classic profile, youth vibe) easily won the attention of the mass populace as well as a spot in some of the most iconic classic films like, Zoo in Budapest with Loretta Young, and a series of light RKO musicals, which usually with Ann Sothern. He wrote a number of songs, including the popular “Will You?” which he sang to Sothern in Smartest Girl in Town (1936). 

Nel Bentley Hees and Gene Raymond’s marriage

Nel Bentley Hees walked down the aisle with Gene Raymond on the 8th September, 1974.

This was Nelson’s first marriage, however, but for Gene it was his second. He was actually married to Raymond to Jeanette MacDonald in 1937.

He had met her at a Hollywood party two years earlier at Roszika Dolly’s home; and as Gene had hoped for, MacDonald agreed to a date, as long as it was at her family’s dinner table. Despite the strong relationship, Raymond’s mother did not like MacDonald, attempting to ignore her most of the times.

However, after twenty eight years of staying married and in love, Gene lost Jeanette to a heart attack which claimed her life. 

Gene took a second try at love by marrying Nelson, but sadly, she also died twenty seven years after they had tied the knot.

Nelson Bentley Hees and Gene Raymond never bore a child owing to Raymond’s inability to do so. Raymond’s inability to have children came to light some years after he married Jeanette( she actually was the one to announce it).

Nel Bentley Hees’ husband, Raymond died of pneumonia, nine years after she had passed away from Alzheimer, on May 3, 1998, at 89 years of age. This happened at the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, California. His body was interred next to Jeanette MacDonald’s in the Freedom Mausoleum at Forest Lawn, Glendale.
