He attended New Mexico Military Institute and later went to University of Texas, he attended a time when it was known Texas Western College. He started his broadcasting career in university by working as the station master of the school’s radio station.
After university, he went to work in the military for a while, after which he was employed by KRLD-TV, a CBS affiliate television in Dallas. Texas.
