He attended Billerica Memorial School and that was where he started his baseball journey and also being the letterman for the school’s ice hockey team.
His professional career as a baseball player started after he was drafted in the 1984 NHL Entry Draft by Los Angeles Kings. He made his major league debut in 1987 when he played for Atlanta Braves. Tom played for Atlanta Braves from 1987 to 2002, then he went on to play for New York Mets (2003-2007).
Tom later went back to Atlanta Braves in 2009. He played for just a season and he retired. Due to his numerous contributions to the Atlanta Braves team, his 47 jersey was retired by the team in 2010.
