Richard Hanley Jaeckel was born October 10, 1926 in Long Beach, New York to Millicent Hnaley and R.chard Jaeckel. His father worked in his family fur business, while his mother was a stage actor.

Jaeckel attended the Harvey School and other private schools. He later attended the Hollywood High school when his family moved to Los Angeles.

He started his acting career at age seventeen, when he was a mail boy at the 20th Century Fox studios in Hollywood. Throughout his over 50 years career, he played varieties of roles and characters in both film and television shows.

Though he is well known as an actor, Antoinette Marches husband, also served in the United States Merchant marines from 1944 to 1949. During that period, he starred in two war films ; Battleground and Sands of Iwo Jima. These two are among the most remembered wars films ever produced.
