On November 2, 1962, Ladd was found lying unconscious in a pool of blood with a bullet wound near his heart. The bullet penetrated Ladd’s chest around the third and fourth rib, through the lungs, and bounced off the rib cage Alan told the police he thought he heard a prowler, so he grabbed a gun, and tripped over, accidentally shooting himself.
