He grew up in the West side of Chicago and attended Austin High School, where he graduated in 1975. His interest in acting started when he was still in high school. He drew the attention of Chicago’s X Bag Theatre while reading Sophocles‘ Oedipus Rex in his high school days.
He auditioned and played roles in local plays by Chicago’s Experimental Actor’s Guild. This opened the way for him to be giving an a role in a 1975 movie titled Cooley High. Though he was not giving any credit in the movie, he claimed it was that movie that changed his life.

Robert Townsend studied one year at Illinois University after high school, and later moved to Negro Ensemble Company.
His mother wanted him to have college education, but the comedian felt it was killing his passion for acting. He finally left university to pursue his acting career full time.
